Potty training is very important for your child and proves really helpful especially when you are away from home. There can be instances when you may have to go out for shopping or to attend any function. You need to prepare your child for such circumstances so that he could handle it easily.

At home he knows that he has to go to bathroom at times of ‘pee or b m’ but he does not know where to go when you have taken him outside with you.  It all depends whether your child is still in the training process or he has completed it. There are children who feel comfortable in diapers while others don’t. If your child is in a habit of wearing diapers then you can take him out in the diapers itself. Diapers can be easily removed without making the child wait in long queue in public bathrooms.

If your child wears underwear then you should not force him to use a diaper instead of underwear, rather you must prepare yourself before leaving the house. It is good to carry tissues and extra cloth so that you can handle the accidents.  Before you take your child outside to spend some time away from home, you should instruct him how to manage at times of accidents he will develop the habit gradually.

It is also important to teach your child terms to be used publicly, like ‘pee, poo and b m’ so that it could be easy for you to understand what your child is saying in front of others. Discussing the matter with your child’s caregiver will also help you in potty training. For this you need to tell them what phase of training your child is at and what his routine at home is. This will definitely make potty training a good experience for your child both at home and outside.

You must teach your child to use public toilet at times of emergency if he feels uncomfortable by ensuring him that there is nothing to worry. Also make him learn to differentiate between the rest or wash room signs. If your child is small then you should go with him so that he does not get scared.

You need to teach him three important things i.e.

Tell him how to remove his own pants

How to use or sit on the pot

Flush after use

Make your child wear a comfortable pant that has elastic on the waist so that your child is able to remove it easily. You must make the boys learn to use their pants’ fly front.  At the initial training the boys are asked to sit down while doing ‘pee or b m’. When he grows a little bigger then he is asked to stand for urinating. Be sure that you teach him how to flush the toilet after use and how to clean his bottom.

There may be cases where you will not find bathrooms, at that time you must teach your child how to urinate outdoors. Some children are fine with it while some others feel shy doing it outdoors. Don’t make them hold it for long as it will be very difficult for them. You must take them to urinate as soon as they feel like doing it. Boys should learn from their fathers while girls must follow their mothers’ instructions. If you train your child properly then he will be comfortable in all circumstances whether indoors or outdoors. The girls must learn to sit and urinate so that their feet and clothing don’t get wet. You must help your daughter by showing her the correct way to eliminate at outdoors.

If you find potty training your child difficult then you can take the help and advice from a child pediatrician, he will solve all your problems and concerns regarding toilet training so if you are confused and don’t know what to do then it’s better to talk with your pediatrician. Sometimes the problem is minor and a pediatrician will solve it quickly, but in certain cases it may take more time due to some inner cause. Being specialists pediatricians will take care of your child’s problems therefore his/her advice and suggestions will make toilet training easier.

Some Helpful Tips for the Parents

If you have to go outside the house then don’t worry about your child and his bowel movements. The tips given below will solve all your problems:

Check Your Child’s Diet: you must not feed your child with heavy food when you know that you have to go out in a few hours. You can give him light food and milk at least 2 hours before you leave the house.

Make Your Child Eliminate Before Leaving:  Before leaving the house it is better to ask your child once whether he wants to go for potty or ‘pee or poo’. If he resists then even you must ask him to sit in his potty chair for at least two minutes.

Carry The Essentials Required In Case Of Accidents: If you have a car then you must carry all the things your child may need after eliminating. These are not very huge or heavy things and you can carry them easily. It should include plastic adapter ring that can be adjusted in an adult toilet seat, tissues and napkins. Carry extra clothes for the child so that if he becomes wet or dirty then you can change the clothes.

Don’t make him Hold His Bowel Movement: If your child tells you that he wants to go for ‘b m’ then you must quickly take him for it. It is not good to tell him to ‘Hold it’ as they are very small to hold it for too long. This will result into an accident. He may even feel pain in the stomach for holding it for a long time.

Search for a Washroom: You must look for washroom or bathroom as soon as you reach the destination. Then take your child to the washroom and clean his body and clothes. Ask him to sit in the potty chair for some more time.

If you follow these tips properly then you and your child both will have a nice time even away from home. But don’t be careless towards your child as these are pretty new things for him and he may need sometime to learn them with perfection.

Apart from all these, if you are traveling from one place to the other then you must carry other accessories like a waterproof bedcover, plastic tablecloth and a small potty chair for your child.  The child is in a habit of using all these accessories at home hence if you will not provide him with all these then he may get upset. Make sure that your child is comfortable in whatever you ask him to do. Don’t compel him for anything and punishments are strictly prohibited. An important thing to consider is to protect the child from germs and dirt.

Therefore whenever you are taking your child out either for shopping or parties then it is better to make them eliminate before you leave home. Your child’s clothes must be loose enough so that you can remove them quickly at times of accidents. Don’t forget to carry extra diapers or training pants. Take him to the washroom after giving him food or drink of any kind. You have to encourage them to sit and use the toilet. Be with him and don’t leave him alone.
