i am going to bring home a gorgeous Cavalier King Charles in 3 months. i have read many articles which states that we must take our puppy out every hour, for the first month. im not sure how that is works . he has to get practiced going potty in the designated spot within the apartment ,right? how do i make this happen? what do i do? i have removed all the carpets in the house( for safety). are there any other precautions i need to take or tools to be kept ready before the dog arrives home?

you take him out to pee every hour,,, OUTSIDE,,, never encourage him to potty inside

make sure you have a crate ready.. and ask your breeder to start his crate training before he comes home

puppy pads are great for when u are not there to take the puppy out. I always praised my dog for using the potty outside, that seems to work better than scolding them for using it inside.

first of all no your dog does not go in a spot WITHIN the apartment, he goes outside, you are just teaching him it’s okay to go inside by doing it that way.. and why would you remove carpet? a dog could seriously injure themselves on hard wood/vinyl floors, they slide everywhere.

I am not a user of crate training, because i don’t believe animals should have to spend their lives in cages, although I know it does work very well for a lot of dogs, so you can try that if you wish.

With crate training, if you are leaving him in over night be prepared to get up at least twice to let him out, and praise him heavily when he goes outside, always when you take him out use a command like “go potty” or some other term you like so he gets the idea of what he is supposed to do when you say that, also, when you praise him do it as soon as he squats and starts going. worked perfect for our pup.

you really need to let him out very frequently. when my pup was learning i was taking him out about every hour to an hour and a half.

also, you can’t punish the dog for eliminating in the house unless you actually catch them in the act, afterwards it is too late and the dog does not understand why they are in trouble, should be farily easy though, as this age i’m sure you have him in your sight at all times.

make sure your dog is on a feeding/water schedule as well, always have water available but cut it off at about 6:30 for the night so it is easier for them to hold it at night while sleeping. puppies should be fed three times a day NOT twice actually. until they are 6 months old, at this age it is okay to go to twice a day, but never go to once, that is not enough. twice a day keeps your dog on a regular routine and also keeps their bowels on a regular routine.
after water, wait about 15-20 minutes to take your dog to potty, after food wait about 30-45 minutes to take them to eliminate, increase the time as t hey grow older and as you see fit

    Hey doglover,

I have a 1yr ahsas laso dog “shiztzu” dog. I went to petco and bought a book I”traning for puppies”. It’s a really good book. I read the book and started traning my dog and in 2 weeks she was train. Now I leave her home alone and she will not use the restroom in the house not even on her doggie diaper. she waits until I take her outside. You might want to go to petco an check it out.

Never start allowing him to pee inside. From day one you should take him out to potty. Take him for walks first thing in the morning (like 5:30 AM- not like 8 AM) after he eats, when he wakes up from a nap, after vigorous play and before bed. If he is very young he will also need a potty break in the middle of the night. There will still be accidents, for sure, but allowing a dog to urinate and defecate in your house is germy, smelly, and very hard to break them of later.

First figure out if you’re going to train him to go in the apartment (potty pads or litterbox) or outside. Then, stick with that decision.

My doxie puppy in my apartment was allowed to go outside or on potty pads (I kept in the bathroom, next to the toilet), and I basically kept him quarantineed to the bathroom area for the first few weeks, and only got to wander the apartment when I was able to supervise him. But, once I figured out how soon after he ate that he would go potty, I was able to feed him, wait about 30 mins (might differ with your pup), and then I sat in the bathroom with him and kept putting him on the potty pad until he went on the pad; then I would treat and praise him. At first, you treat and praise if he’s even partially on the potty pad and as he gets the hang of it, you can only treat/praise when he’s going right on the pad.
Same thing with going outside, when you figure out his bowel movement schedule, take him out a little while after he eats and treat and praise him.

Personally, I’ve rescued lots of puppies and don’t have the time to take them out every hour, but if you have that kind of time, then great! Otherwise, I just keep them in a small, tiled area (laundry room, bathroom, or kitchen are good), so they aren’t peeing everywhere and they don’t have enough space to run to get their bowel movements going. If they do go in a non-potty area, I rub their nose along the carpet/rug at the edge of the pee/poop (so they smell the carpet and pee or poop together), then I firmly say “NO” and bop them on the nose; then, they get a 3-5 minute time out (either in their bed or other designated area.) This generally gets them pottytrained fairly quickly.

    Good Luck!
