My daughter turned 3 this past October. We are trying to get her potty trained and nothing is working. She used to be in daycare and they tried there as well, and she has no interest. We have tried rewards, books, putting dolls on the potty, letting her keep the potty in different rooms, and she just won’t do it. She cries if we try to put underwear on her instead of a diaper. Pull ups don’t work and are a waste of money. We get different opinions from doctors. She had kidney reflux when she was a baby and has since grown out of it, but the Urologist says don’t pressure her because it’s not good for her to hold it in. (Which she would do all day at daycare when she did wear underwear. I would pick her up and she hadn’t spoiled her pants all day). Her pediatrician said she will just do it when she’s ready, where as the nurse practitioner seemed to think she should really be going. And of course, everyone else that we know of that has kids apparently potty trained them when they were 2 years old! (Not sure if I always believe them! Do you have any suggestions? I know she is physically ready, but if she really doesn’t want to do it yet, should I just wait? I don’t want her to think the potty is a bad thing!! Thanks!
How to potty train the child is the biggest question that most of parents face. This is because changing the habit of the child from nappies to using a potty is something very difficult. The parents are mainly worried about the amount of time they will take to potty train. But it totally depends upon the child, some may take few days and some may take a year too. You and your child can be successful in potty training if you are aware of the fundamentals of training, so that the process becomes easy for you.
The question how to potty train can be overcome by following a few steps.
The first step towards potty training is to notice whether your child is physically and emotionally prepared for the training. Watch out for the signs like child imitating other’s bathroom habits. Do not force your child for anything unless and until he/she is ready.
To start with the training you need to have a good potty chair for your child with which you can train the child. The potty chair that you select must be a comfortable one so that he can easily fit his feet. You can also use the explanatory book or video provided by the seller of the potty chair, to grab your child interest.
It is very important for you to maintain a proper routine for the baby. This will help the child to get use to it. If he/she does not show the interest in the potty it’s better to stop the potty training for few days, weeks or months.
Sit your child without nappy on the potty seat. Notice the reaction and feeling when the child is sitting there. This is when you will make your child understand that what your parents do every day and make the child realize that he/she is grown up. When he/she goes in the nappy, you should take him to the potty, make him sit near you and empty the nappy in the potty bowl. This will help him to make connection. And then show to flush it off and this all will help him to understand the whole process. Do not forget to teach him to dress himself/herself and wash the hands one’s done with it.
After this it is very important that you encourage your child use the potty whenever he/she feels the urge to go. It is advisable that you bring attractive and fascinating pants for your child during the training process so that you do not make use of nappy. Your child may go through some accidents before completely trained. Your child may take few more days for the night time potty training. The body of the child is actually immature to wake him up in the middle of the night and so you must not allow him/ her to drink too much before going to bed. You can even tell the child to let you know whenever he feels like going. In this way you can successfully potty train your child.

A Potty Party is a great way to kick off potty training. Who doesn’t love a party? You can make it a big party with friends, maybe a playgroup party if you are all starting to potty train at the same time or make it just you and your child, they love that individual attention. You can also have your local Baby Signs Instructor come and present a free potty party for you and your playgroup! Find your local instructor at
For your own party here are the basics:
1. Talk it up all week. Be really excited about it! Even if your child is not too excited about potty training, if you are excited it’s contagious.
2. Wrap gifts for your child to open first thing that day. Some good gift ideas are:
*Potty Chair
*Big Kid Underwear
*Flushable Wipes
*Special Soap
*Bubbles To Blow While Sitting On The Potty
*Potty Train DVD
*Potty Train Book
*Doll to Demonstrate Potty Time
*Special Toy For Potty Time Only
3. Make a cake, cupcakes or ice cream sundaes… it’s just not a party without cake.
4. Get a few balloons and small decorations to make it look like a party.
5. A good decoration is underwear on you head for party hats…. really. Just send me a picture ![]()
6. Watch their new Potty Train DVD, read the book and stay excited about little Johnny becoming a big boy and using the potty.
7. Take him with you every time you go to the bathroom. Let him choose to either sit on the potty himself or have his new doll (stuffed animal) sit on the potty.
8. Keep him in underwear, clean up accidents quickly and quietly with “Oops! Let’s try to make it to the potty next time!” And continue on with the party.
9. Craft Time – Make a Rewards Chart With Your Child. *Or buy one and have them help you put it up.
Have it made up for one week. If you make anew one each week it helps keep it fun for your child.
Have a place for them to put a sticker on the chart every time they tell Mommy they need to go potty, pee, poop and wash their hands.
Have a special prize for no accidents in a day and a larger prize for no accidents in a week.
Kids need constant positive reinforcement and excitement to keep them involved.
These parties are lots of fun and a great way to get kids excited about potty training.
